Bombing of Azaz, Aleppo, Syria

Smuggled footage of brutal bombing the Azaz neighborhood of Aleppo, Syria, in which the Syrian Air Force dropped 500 pound bombs on a residential neighborhood, maiming and killing many women and children. The dictator Assad must be stopped, we need the USA to spearhead a no-fly zone. Stop the genocide.

Robert Reich (Erasing W)

Great essay

Robert Reich (Erasing W)

As Bill Clinton is resurrected by the Democrats, George W. Bush is being erased by the GOP — as if an entire eight years of American history hadn’t happened.
While Bill Clinton stumps for Obama, Romney has gone out of his way not to mention the name of the president who came after Clinton and before Obama.
Clinton will have a starring role at the Democratic National Convention. George W. Bush won’t even be at the Republican one – the first time a national party has not given the stage at its convention to its most recent occupant of the Oval Office who successfully ran for reelection.
The GOP is counting on America’s notoriously short-term memory to blot out the last time the nation put a Republican into the Oval Office, on the reasonable assumption that such a memory might cause voters to avoid making the same mistake twice. As whoever-it-was once said, “fool me once …” (and then mangled the rest).
Republicans want to obliterate any trace of the administration that told America there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and led us into a devastating war; turned a $5 trillion projected budget surplus into a $6 trillion deficit; gave the largest tax cut in a generation to the richest Americans in history; handed out a mountain of corporate welfare to the oil and gas industry, pharmaceutical companies, and military contractors like Halliburton (uniquely benefiting the vice president); whose officials turned a blind eye to Wall Street shenanigans that led to the worst financial calamity since the Great Crash of 1929 and then persuaded Congress to bail out the Street with the largest taxpayer-funded giveaway of all time.
Besides, the resemblances between George W. Bush and Mitt Romney are too close for comfort. Both were born into wealth, sons of prominent politicians who themselves ran for president; both are closely tied to the nation’s corporate and financial elites, and eager to do their bidding; both are socially awkward and, as candidates, tightly scripted for fear of saying something they shouldn’t; and both presented themselves to the nation devoid of any consistent policies or principles that might give some clue as to what they actually believe.
They are both, in other words, unusually shallow, uncurious, two-dimensional men who ran or are running for the presidency for no clear reason other than to surpass their fathers or achieve the aims and ambitions of their wealthy patrons.
Small wonder the Republican Party wants us to forget our last Republican president and his administration. By contrast, the Democrats have every reason for America to recall and celebrate the Clinton years.

So, where do states stand on the Medicaid expansion? - Lean Forward

So, where do states stand on the Medicaid expansion? - Lean Forward

Cognitive research at the University of Chicago and elsewhere demonstrates that the more complex an issue becomes, human beings are increasingly drawn to ‘narratives’ about the issue, and thus short-circuit the review of complex, detailed facts. Certainly there are those who have in fact reviewed all of the ACA facts and still hate it. But it’s also clear that many millions of Americans have strong opinions about ACA based on narratives about ACA, who have not actually educated themselves in the real details of its provisions. Thus, a majority of Americans do like the provisions of ACA, when the provisions are recited to them individually, yet they do not like ACA! There can be only one explanation for this phenomenon - they are in the grip of narratives about ACA. If citizens do not feel disposed to actually study the factual provisions of a public policy, I suppose as a society we deserve the outcome we will receive. So, I do appreciate people like Wanda Garr above who’ve tried to study the facts and create an informed opinion.

According to the Oil Price Information Service, a record 65% of the world's oil supply is now purchased by speculators, who they estimate have added 14% to oil costs, or 50 cents to each gallon of gas.
The futures markets are regulated by the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

CFTC FAQ:
Q. Who heads the CFTC?
A. Goldman Sachs alumni Gary Gensler

Q: Why doesn't the CFTC curb speculative excesses in oil trading?
A: Dodd-Frank mandated that by February, 2012, the CFTC write rules for the oil markets designed to stop excessive oil market speculation. But it never happened. Gensler suspended implementing the rules, citing concerns raised by Wall Street firms, led by JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, and their top-shelf legal teams.

Q. Haven't I heard of the CFTC before?
A. The CFTC was thought to be a major contributor to the mortgage meltdown, through negligent oversight of 'junk' mortgage-related futures instruments, leading to strengthened rules under Dodd-Frank. The CFTC was also recently in the news for its failed oversight of MF Global, where $1 billion of investor funds turned up missing. MF Global is run by former Goldman Sachs CEO John Corzine

Q. Why is the CFTC a year late implementing the other Dodd-Frank reforms?
A. The congressional Republicans slashed the CFTC budget last year. You know, we have to balance the budget, right? Gensler says he doesn't have the manpower to implement the reforms.

The Limbaugh Incident and the GOP Morality Deficit

The Limbaugh Incident: My Thoughts

How are Presidential candidates who are moral cowards before the misogynistic bullying of Rush Limbaugh to be trusted to protect the interests of the United States of America as our President?

What if a popular figure in the high school of their daughter had (underline) broadcast (underline) these explicit sexual insults about her over the PA system to the entire high school student body? Would our candidates only response be "he's an entertainer"? Or a limp-wristed "I wouldn't have chosen those words"?

No way, they would have confronted the situation forcefully I think. But!

But, when it is politically expedient to do so, the GOP candidates fail to condemn what other principled conservatives, including George Will, have strongly and publicly condemned.

In this context, there was blatant hypocrisy on display yesterday by Romney and the others, who postured themselves at the AIPAC conference as tough guys with an immediate willingness to attack Iran.

Yes, we have the towering moral fiber Obama lacks, we will move our aircraft carriers to the gulf, we will bomb them without mamby-pambying. We will be just as unwavering and tough with Iran, as we demonstrated confronting the explicit sexual insults of a leading GOP broadcaster who, over a period of days, attempted to destroy a private citizen. That's how tough we are. Get it?

Let's be honest: the only unwavering principle these GOP candidates stand for is pandering for votes. Romney is particularly craven; he behaves like a cringing dog before the extreme right, for which the hate-spewing Limbaugh is a principal mouthpiece.. a bully who is a well of irrational poisonous drivel that his well-intentioned conservative listeners drink from every day.

There is nothing more despicable than watching these GOP candidates sociopathically wrap themselves up in the American flag and pretend to be tough by showing off an immediate willingness to risk other people's lives in war.

Want to show us tough? Condemn Rush Limbaugh's explicit sexual attacks on a young woman. Risk some votes if you have to. Shame on them, the cowards.

The presumptive nominee Romney's authenticity is downright invisible both to the right and the left: there 'is no there, there'.

Show us something real about your leadership, Mitt. Say, condemn attacks on the President's religious beliefs by your opponents or the Limbaugh assaults.

You say you're a leader? Response is the root word of responsibility, and real leaders respond for us and are willing to take risks in doing so. And Mr. Romney, you are morally irresponsible in the Limbaugh and in other situations. That's what you are showing us about your qualifications to be our President: we can't trust you do to do what is right, even if it is unpopular. We're getting the message.

The apparent lack of an authentic core in Romney should be deeply troubling to anyone thinking of putting him in the oval office. We don't know what this man really is - if anything - inside. But we do know that he's a rockstar at self-concealment and shameless posturing.

Komen vice president Karen Handel resigns - The Washington Post

I'm going to share this with my kids.. this is appropriate apology language, short and sweet, no finger-pointing, and takes responsibility:
In a statement on Handel’s resignation, Brinker said, “We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted.”

The Many Faces of SAP at Apple

Very interesting presentation by Jake Logan of Apple - wizardry that ties SAP to different Apple corporate interfaces. You would never think an application as elegant as the iTunes Store generates new orders in plain old SAP SD - but it does.

Part II Includes presentation of the SAP BW 3.5 Data on Web-based platform.

Quadrophobia: Strategic Rounding of EPS Data by Joseph Grundfest, Nadya Malenko

SSRN-Quadrophobia: Strategic Rounding of EPS Data by Joseph Grundfest, Nadya Malenko

Stanford Business School researchers demonstrate that "managed earnings" are easily detectable by looking at whether corporate EPS tends to dis-include the number 4. For companies using accounting methods to heighten reported earnings, Quadrophobia will occur as companies that are manipulating earnings will find a way to make 0.4 EPS, 0.5 or higher -- as when an EPS fraction is at 0.4, the number will be rounded down to 0.0.

In the study, top chart is the actuals, while the second is the EPS fraction. If there were no bias (null hypothesis here), the second chart actuals would fall in the confidence interval for the null hypothesis (no bias).

Von Trapp Lodge

Crisp Serenity, originally uploaded by Trapp Family Lodge.
My daughter and I just watched "The Sound of Music" again, and I showed her pictures of the Von Trapp lodge near Stowe, Vermont. I had skiied there in the 80s when visiting my Uncle Bob who lived nearby in Essex, NY.

This pretty photo was taken near the Vermont Von Trapp lodge.
